Convert ASCII Grid to GeoTIFF
Turn an ASCII numeric grid into a tiled, DEFLATE-compressed GeoTIFF for QGIS or another GIS application. Recast reads the grid locally and keeps its pixel values and available georeferencing.
An Arc/Info ASCII Grid .asc file, with a matching .prj when available.
A .tif GeoTIFF, or a ZIP if auxiliary output files are needed.
How to convert
- Select the .asc and its matching .prj together, for example elevation.asc and elevation.prj.
- Review dimensions, bands, and the coordinate system shown by Recast.
- Leave GeoTIFF selected and click Make compatible with QGIS.
- Save the output and check the grid’s location and nodata values in your GIS application.
Positioning is not the same as CRS
An ASCII Grid can describe a cell size and origin without identifying the coordinate system. A matching .prj supplies that definition when available. If no CRS is found, Recast shows a warning and retains the coordinates it can read rather than inventing a CRS.
Numeric data, not an image preview
This workflow preserves the raster data instead of rendering colours for a PNG or JPEG. Recast does not offer image-preview exports. Its GeoTIFF checks cover output dimensions, band type, nodata, and georeferencing before the download.
Converting in the other direction
GeoTIFF to ASCII Grid is also available. Choose one band; the raster must have known positioning, north-up orientation, and square pixels. That output is a ZIP containing the .asc and available sidecars. Colours and other bands are not part of the selected-band export.
