Recast

Convert KML to GeoJSON

Bring KML vector features into a web mapping workflow without uploading the file. Recast reads .kml input and offers GeoJSON or GeoPackage output.

Bring

An uncompressed .kml file containing vector features. KMZ is not accepted.

Get

One selected layer as WGS 84 .geojson, or vector layers in a .gpkg.

How to convert

  1. Drop the .kml file into Recast and review the detected layers.
  2. Choose GeoJSON as the output format. If several layers are present, select the layer you want.
  3. Read the KML conversion note and click Convert file.
  4. Save the download and inspect the features in your target map application.

What carries over

The conversion targets vector geometry and ordinary attributes. Recast reopens the output and checks the selected layer’s feature count. This is a data conversion, not an export of the full Google Earth presentation.

What does not carry over

KML styles, icons, tours, folders, and imagery overlays may not survive or are outside the supported workflow. Recast does not produce KML or KMZ output. If those presentation features matter, keep the original KML and use an application that supports them.

Working with multiple layers

GeoJSON exports one layer at a time. GeoPackage output offers All layers if you need the detected vector layers together. You can also process several separate KML files in a sequential batch and download each result.

Free, local, and subject to memory limits

No account or file upload is required. Batches run one dataset at a time. Check the file limits and supported outputs before starting, especially for large rasters or ZIP bundles.
